Food in Muar

Muar is one of the best places for food in Malaysia despite their local delicacies being quite underrated to many people.


Some flavours from the dishes differ from other states, especially the north of Peninsular Malaysia where Penang is located, while some dishes can only be found in the town itself.

1. Otak-Otak


Otak-Otak is fish paste grilled wrapped in banana leaf and it’s Muar’s most well known dish. Otak-Otak has many variations throughout Southeast Asia and Muar’s is red from the chilli added to the dish, which gives it a spicy kick.

2. Mee Bandung


Originated in Muar, this savoury dish consists of yellow noodles served with gravy that gives a prawn flavour and has a mild spicy taste.

3. Laksa


If you’re not familiar with local delicacies in Muar, you will definitely mistake Muar’s Laksa for Penang’s Assam Laksa. This variation of laksa resembles the taste of curry mee.

4. Asam Pedas Fish


This simple dish only consists of steamed fish and spicy soup with a hint of tanginess. Usually served with rice, vegetables and other side dishes such as fried eggs and other seafood for the perfect experience.

5. Wantan Mee


The past few dishes are all spicy but for the non-spicy lovers, this one's for you! What makes the wantan mee in Muar special is that you’ll be asked if you prefer your noodles cooked with or without chilli because people in Muar do love their chilli.
