What is Sustainable Tourism?

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities”
Definition by The World Tourism Organization
Too complicated?
Basically sustainable tourism wants travellers to not only enjoy their time discovering new places but to protect the economy, society and environment at the same time.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development SDG target 8.9 aims to promote sustainable tourism that endorses the local culture and products while creating more job opportunities.
Therefore sustainable tourism benefits both the travellers and host community!
Here are some tips on how you can be a sustainable traveller:
1. Support local businesses
Visit bazaars, night markets and purchase locally made souvenirs
2. Try local delicacies
Search for regional specialities
3. Take public transport
Opt for buses, ride a bike, carpool or walk if you can!
4. Stay in eco-friendly accommodation
Live in homestays and green hotels
